Raingo Frères were one of the better established bronziers and clockmakers of the 19th century. The business was founded in 1813 and established at 8 rue de la Touraine by 1830. Around 1860 they carried out work for Napoleon III and the Empress Eugénie. As well as making clocks and clock cases in their own right, they acted as fondeurs for a number of important artists, amongst them Pradier, Carrier-Belleuse and August Moreau.

Marcel Rieder is a French painter, born in Thann, Alsace, France on March 19, 1862. Among known people of his family were his grand father, Jean Jacque Rieder (1778-1852), minister of the temple in Strasbourg, and one of his uncle, Fritz Rieder (1828-1896), founder of "Ecole Alsacienne" in Paris.

Marcel Rieder studied painting at "Ecole des Beaux Arts", in Paris. He exhibited his work at the "Salon de Paris" nearly every year from 1883 until 1939. He became a member of the "Societe des Artistes Francais" in 1894.

He started by painting allegoric subjects. One of his most famous early paintings is "Dante Pleurant Beatrice", Mulhouse museum.

Around 1894 his style changed. He became interested and famous for his light effects. Most of his paintings are peaceful indoor scenes with the different lighting that was used during his lifetime, ranging from oil to electrical. Some scenes are outdoors, at dusk, when the light is in between day and night.
